Key Facts
Why Did the Fighting Start?
Sometimes, when groups of people disagree, they start fighting. In 1982, there were disagreements between Israel and a group called the PLO, who were in Lebanon. They had been having smaller fights for a while. Then, something happened that made Israel decide to send its soldiers into Lebanon. It was like a big argument that turned into a much bigger problem.
Israel's Big Trip to Lebanon
Israel's army, called the IDF, went into Lebanon in June 1982. They wanted to stop the PLO from attacking Israel. They moved through southern Lebanon and even got close to the capital city, Beirut. It was a very busy time with lots of soldiers and vehicles moving around. The soldiers were on a mission called Operation Peace for Galilee.
A City Under Siege
The Israeli army surrounded Beirut, the capital city. This meant that people inside the city couldn't easily get out, and supplies couldn't get in. It was a very difficult situation for everyone there. Eventually, after a lot of talking and with help from other countries, the PLO soldiers agreed to leave Lebanon.
What Happened Next?
After the PLO left, things changed in Lebanon. Israel wanted to make sure that Lebanon would be safe for them. But sometimes, even after a big event, new problems can pop up. The war ended for Israel in September 1982, but the country of Lebanon had a lot to figure out.
