Who Was Yuri Gagarin?

Yuri Gagarin was a brave pilot from a country called the Soviet Union. On April 12, 1961, he climbed into a rocket and blasted off into space! He was the very first person ever to do this. His spaceship, called Vostok 1, went all the way around our planet Earth. It was like taking a super-fast trip around your playground, but way, way bigger and much higher up!

Yuri's trip into space lasted for 108 minutes, which is about as long as two school lessons. During his flight, he saw our beautiful blue Earth from a window. He was so excited and famous that people all over the world wanted to meet him. He got lots of special medals and was called a hero. It was a huge moment for everyone on Earth!

Before Yuri Gagarin flew into space, he was a regular kid who grew up in a village. He worked in a factory and then became a pilot in the air force, flying planes. He was chosen from many pilots to be one of the first people to train for space travel. He had to be super strong and smart for this important job.
