Key Facts
When Summer Took a Vacation!
Have you ever wished for a super long summer? Well, in 1816, it felt like summer just disappeared! It was so cold that snow fell in many places, even in the middle of summer. This strange year is called the 'Year Without a Summer.' It made it super hard for people to grow food, and many families didn't have enough to eat. It was a very confusing and difficult time for everyone around the world.
A Volcano's Big Surprise!
So, why did summer vanish? It was all because of a super, super giant volcano named Mount Tambora that exploded in 1815. This volcano was so huge, it sent tons and tons of ash and dust way up into the sky.
This ash cloud was like a giant blanket, blocking out the sun's warm rays. Imagine trying to have a picnic when the sun is hidden behind a huge, dusty curtain. That's what happened for a whole year!
Snowy Summers and Sad Crops!
Because the sun couldn't warm the Earth properly, places that were usually warm in the summer got very cold. In some parts of Europe, it was colder than any summer on record! Crops like wheat and corn couldn't grow well because of the frost and lack of sunshine. This meant there wasn't enough food for people and animals. It was a tough time, and people had to find new ways to survive.
Adventures Because of the Cold!
In North America, the cold weather caused a strange 'dry fog' that made the sun look dim. It was so cold that plants froze, and farmers couldn't grow their food. This made many families decide to pack up their homes and move to find better places to live and farm. This big move helped people explore new parts of the country, all because of a year without summer!
