Nigeria's Big Challenge
When Yakubu Gowon was the leader, Nigeria went through a very difficult time called the Nigerian Civil War. It was a sad period where different parts of the country were fighting. General Gowon was the leader during this war.
After the fighting stopped, he gave a very famous speech. He said 'no victor, no vanquished,' which meant that even though there was a winner, nobody should feel like a loser. He wanted everyone to be friends again.

General Gowon believed very strongly that Nigeria should stay one big, united country. He was from a smaller group of people in Nigeria, but he wanted all the different groups to get along.
