Welcome to the White City!

In 1893, Chicago built a magical place called the World's Columbian Exposition. It was like a giant party to celebrate 400 years since Christopher Columbus sailed to America. This special city had over 200 buildings, all painted white, which is why people called it the 'White City'.

It had sparkling canals and lagoons, and people from 46 different countries came to show off their cultures. It was a super exciting event that millions of people wanted to see!

A City Built for Fun!

This amazing fair was built in a park called Jackson Park. It was huge, covering almost 700 acres, which is bigger than 500 football fields! The buildings were designed to look grand and fancy, like palaces.

One of the most exciting things was the very first Ferris wheel ever invented! It was as tall as a 30-story building, making it a super tall ride for everyone to enjoy. It was a place full of wonder and new inventions.

Why Was It So Special?

The White City showed everyone how amazing America was becoming. It was a chance for people to see new inventions and art from all over the world. It also helped Chicago show that it was a strong city, even after a big fire had happened years before. Millions of people visited, making it one of the biggest events ever. It was a big deal that made people feel proud and excited about the future.

A Day to Remember!

On a special day called 'Chicago Day', over 750,000 people came to the fair! That's more people than live in some big cities! They came to see the incredible sights and enjoy the festivities. The fair was a huge success, and it helped Chicago become a famous and important city. Even today, a star on Chicago's flag reminds people of this amazing event.
