Meet Your Last Teeth!

Imagine your mouth is like a busy playground with 32 spots for teeth. The wisdom teeth are the very last ones to arrive, usually when you're a teenager, around 17 to 20 years old. They are the back-most teeth, way in the back of your mouth.

Most people get four of them, one in each corner, but some people get fewer, or even more! These last teeth are called molars, and the wisdom teeth are the third molars.

Why 'Wisdom'?

These teeth get their name because they come in when you're getting older and, well, wiser! It's like your brain is growing up, and your teeth are catching up. They are the very last teeth to erupt, meaning they are the final ones to push through your gums. It takes a long time for them to show up, usually when you're almost an adult.

Sometimes They Get Stuck!

Sometimes, there isn't enough room in your mouth for these big back teeth to come in straight. They can get stuck, or 'impacted,' under your gums. It's like trying to fit a big toy into a small box. If they don't have space, they might come in crooked or not come in at all. This can sometimes cause problems for your other teeth.

Do They Cause Trouble?

Because they are so far back, it can be tricky to clean wisdom teeth really well. This means they can sometimes get cavities or make your gums sore and puffy. If they are causing pain or problems, dentists might suggest taking them out. It's like cleaning up the playground to make sure everyone has enough space and stays healthy!
