Who Was This Super Soldier?

Imagine a brave general who was in charge of the whole U.S. Army for a super long time! That was Winfield Scott. He was born way back in 1786, even before some of your grandparents were born! He was a leader in many big fights, like the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War. He was so important that he was even a candidate to become President of the United States!

Why 'Old Fuss and Feathers'?

Winfield Scott had a funny nickname: 'Old Fuss and Feathers.' It sounds like he was always grumpy, but it was because he really cared about how soldiers acted. He wanted them to be neat and follow all the rules, like wearing their uniforms perfectly. He was also called the 'Grand Old Man of the Army' because he was a general for so many years, almost like a grandpa to the whole army!

Adventures in War!

Scott was a busy general! He fought in battles in places like Canada and Mexico. In Mexico, he led his soldiers all the way to the big capital city, Mexico City! He was super smart and helped win important fights. He was so good at his job that he became the top general in the U.S. Army for 20 years. That's longer than you've been alive!

A Hero for Peace Too!

Even though he was a great warrior, Winfield Scott also helped stop fights from starting. He was like a super-diplomat! He helped make sure America and Great Britain didn't go to war over some arguments. He was also the first U.S. Army officer to be a Lieutenant General since George Washington, which is a really, really high rank!
