King of the Waves!

Imagine a king who used to sail the big, blue ocean! That was King William IV. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1765. Before he was king, he was a sailor in the Royal Navy. He traveled to faraway places and was even called the 'Sailor King' because he loved the sea so much. He became king when he was already 64 years old, which is quite old!

A Royal Sailor's Life

William IV had a very interesting life. He spent time in places like Canada and the Caribbean islands when he was a young sailor. He even had ten children with an actress named Dorothea Jordan, though they were not married.

Later, he married Princess Adelaide. He became king because his older brothers didn't have any children to take the throne after them. It was like a big family game of musical chairs for the crown!

Big Changes for Britain!

When William IV became king, he helped make some really important changes. He helped stop child labor, meaning kids didn't have to work in dangerous places anymore. He also helped end slavery in most of the British Empire, which was a huge step!

The way people voted for their leaders also changed during his time. He was the last king to pick a Prime Minister without Parliament agreeing completely.

The End of an Era

King William IV ruled for seven years, from 1830 to 1837. Sadly, he didn't have any children who lived long enough to become king or queen after him. So, when he passed away, his niece Victoria became the Queen of the United Kingdom. His brother took over in a place called Hanover. This meant that Britain and Hanover were no longer ruled by the same person, ending a long partnership.
