Key Facts
Meet the Giant Space Rock!
The Willamette Meteorite is a super big rock that came all the way from outer space! It's made of metal, mostly iron and nickel. It's so big that it's the largest meteorite ever found in the United States. It was discovered a long, long time ago, in 1902, by a family who found it in their backyard. It’s like finding a treasure from the stars!
How Did It Get Here?
This giant space rock didn't just fall into a backyard. Scientists think it landed somewhere far away, maybe in Canada or Montana! Then, during a super cold time called the Ice Age, giant rivers of ice, called glaciers, moved it all the way to Oregon. It’s like a giant ice truck delivered it to the Willamette Valley! It didn't make a big hole when it landed because it was covered by ice and mud.
A Special Treasure for Native Americans
Long before people found it, the Native American tribes who lived in the Willamette Valley, like the Clackamas Chinook people, knew about this special rock. They called it Tomanowos, which means 'visitor from the sky.' They thought it was a sacred object, a gift from the heavens. It was very important to their stories and traditions.
Where Can You See It Today?
This amazing meteorite is so famous that millions of people have seen it! It lives at a big museum called the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. It’s so big, it’s like a small car! Even though it’s far away, you can still learn all about its incredible journey from space to Earth.
