It sits at the mouth of a river called the Esk, which flows right into the ocean. The weather here can be breezy and fresh, perfect for a day at the beach or exploring the town. It's a beautiful place where land and water have a special meeting spot.

Long, long ago, Whitby was a super busy place for ships! One of the most famous people ever, Captain Cook, learned how to be a sailor right here. He sailed all around the world in a ship called the HMS Endeavour, and guess what? That ship was built in Whitby! This town has a long history of brave explorers and amazing journeys on the water.
Shiny Black Jewels and Spooky Tales!
Whitby has a secret treasure: a shiny black stone called Whitby jet. People used to make beautiful jewelry from it, and it was very popular a long time ago. This town also inspired a very famous spooky story! Bram Stoker wrote his book Dracula here, imagining vampires and castles. Maybe the misty sea air gave him his spooky ideas!
