Who Were the Whigs?

The Whigs were like a super-team in Britain a long, long time ago, from about 350 years ago until about 170 years ago! They were a big political group that worked with the King and Queen and also with the people who made the laws, called Parliament. They believed that the King or Queen shouldn't have ALL the power and that Parliament should have a big say too.

They were like the opposite of another team called the Tories, and they often debated and tried to win arguments to make their ideas the law.

When Did They Rule the Roost?

The Whigs were super powerful for a long time, especially after a big event called the Glorious Revolution in 1688. They were so strong that historians call this time the 'Whig Supremacy'! This means they were in charge of the government for many, many years, from 1714 to 1760.

During this time, they made sure that people who believed in Parliament's power were in important jobs, and they were the ones who helped Britain become a country where laws were made by voting, not just by a king's command.

What Did They Believe In?

The Whigs had some really important ideas! They believed that everyone should follow the rules and laws, and that the King or Queen should also follow them. They also thought that people should be able to practice their own religion, as long as it wasn't the Catholic religion, which was a bit tricky back then.

Later on, they started believing that more people should get to vote, and they even helped to stop slavery! They were also more friendly towards the idea of America becoming its own country.

From Whigs to Liberals!

The Whigs were around for a very long time, but things change! Around 170 years ago, in the 1850s, the Whigs joined up with other groups who wanted to make more changes. When they joined together, they became a new, even bigger team called the Liberal Party!

Some people who used to be Whigs even left the Liberal Party later to start another group. It shows how ideas can grow and change over time, just like how you grow bigger every year!
