When the Grown-Ups Were Scared!

Imagine your town is taken over by grumpy people who don't let anyone play freely. That's what happened to Warsaw, a big city in Poland, a long time ago during a giant war called World War II. The German army was in charge, and the Polish people weren't happy.

They wanted their city back! So, in the summer of 1944, a group called the Home Army decided it was time to fight back and take their home back from the soldiers.

The Big Summer Surprise!

The Polish fighters, called the Home Army, planned a big surprise! They wanted to push the German soldiers out of Warsaw. They thought other friendly armies were coming to help them. So, on August 1st, 1944, they started their big fight. For a little while, it looked like they were winning! They took back parts of their city. But the German soldiers were very strong and had more weapons.

A Long, Tough Fight!

This fight lasted for a super long time, 63 whole days! That's almost as long as summer vacation! Sadly, the Polish fighters didn't get as much help as they hoped. The German army was very powerful and eventually won. They were so angry that they even destroyed much of the city. It was a very sad ending for the brave people of Warsaw.

Why We Remember Warsaw

Even though the uprising didn't win, it was a super brave thing to do. It showed everyone how much the Polish people loved their country and wanted to be free. It was the biggest fight by any group of regular people trying to free their country in that whole big war. We remember them because they were so courageous and fought for what they believed in.
