Meet the Wanderer!

The Wanderer was a ship, but not just any ship. It was built to be a pretty, fast boat for people to enjoy sailing. But then, some people used it for a very sad and wrong purpose. They used it to bring people from Africa to America, even though it was against the law. This happened a long, long time ago, in 1858.

A Secret, Sad Trip

This ship made a secret trip from a place called the Kingdom of Kongo in Africa all the way to a place called Jekyll Island in Georgia, America. It was a very long and scary journey for the people on board. About 400 people survived this terrible trip. It was one of the last times a ship like this brought people illegally to America.

What Happened Next?

After its sad journeys, the Wanderer was caught by the government. During a big war called the Civil War, the other side took the ship and used it for their navy. Later, it was used for carrying regular goods, like a normal boat. Sadly, it got lost at sea in 1871, far away near Cuba.

Remembering the People

Even though the ship is gone, people remember what happened. In 2008, a museum on Jekyll Island opened a special exhibit to tell the story of the Africans who were brought on the Wanderer. There's also a beautiful sculpture on the island to honor them. It's important to learn about these sad parts of history so we can make sure they never happen again.
