Walther von der Vogelweide

Walther von der Vogelweide was a famous singer and poet who lived a super long time ago, around 850 years ago! He didn't just sing; he wrote his own songs in a language called Middle High German. He was like a rockstar of his time, traveling from place to place to perform for kings and queens. His songs were so good that people still remember them today!

Walther wrote two kinds of songs. Some were about love, like secret crushes and sweet feelings. Others were about important things happening in the world, like what leaders were doing. He was the first person to write these kinds of serious songs in German. It’s like he invented a new way for people to share their thoughts and feelings through music.

Because Walther was such a great singer, he got to perform for many important people. One very special person, who would become an emperor, liked Walther's songs so much that he gave him a small piece of land. This was like a special reward for being so talented. It shows how much people appreciated his amazing songs back then.

Walther’s songs were so popular that many of them were written down in special books called manuscripts. Think of them like old-school storybooks! Even though we don't have all of them, we have about 90% of his songs saved. This means his amazing words and ideas have traveled through time to reach us today.
