Key Facts
Welcome to Wainwright!
Wainwright is a small town way up north in Alaska, a place called the Arctic. It's so far north that it's very cold most of the year! The town is right next to a big lagoon, which is like a shallow part of the sea. It's a special place where people have lived for a very long time. The town is named after this lagoon, which was visited by explorers a long, long time ago.
Who Lives Here?
About 600 people call Wainwright home. That's not a lot, maybe like a few classrooms at your school! Most of the people who live here are Iñupiat, which is a Native Alaskan group. They have lived in the Arctic for thousands of years and know how to live in this cold, beautiful place. They are very good at hunting and fishing to get food.
A Town Built for the Cold!
Living in Wainwright means dealing with lots of snow and ice. The houses are built strong to handle the weather. Because it's so far away, getting things to Wainwright can be tricky. Sometimes, boats can bring supplies when the water isn't frozen, and sometimes planes fly in. It's a bit like getting your toys delivered to a very remote island!
Exploring the Past
People have lived in this area for a super long time, but the town of Wainwright as we know it started around 1904. Before that, it was just a place called Wainwright Inlet. Explorers came in boats a long time ago, in 1826, and they were the first non-native people to see the lagoon. They named it after an officer named Lt. John Wainwright.
