Key Facts
Meet the Mystery Planet!
Have you ever played hide-and-seek? Well, scientists once thought there was a planet playing hide-and-seek with us! They called it Vulcan. It was supposed to be super close to the Sun, even closer than Mercury. Imagine trying to spot something hiding right next to a giant flashlight! It would be very, very tricky to see.
A Detective Story in Space!
Long ago, scientists noticed something funny. The planet Mercury wasn't moving exactly how they expected. It was like a race car wobbling a little bit. A very smart mathematician named Urbain Le Verrier thought maybe another planet was pulling on Mercury with its gravity, like a gentle tug. He even named this imaginary planet Vulcan!
Did Vulcan Really Exist?
For many years, astronomers looked and looked for Vulcan. They used big telescopes, but it was like trying to find a tiny firefly in a bright sunny day. Even though some people thought they saw it, no one could ever prove Vulcan was really there. It turns out, the wobble in Mercury's path had a different, even cooler explanation!
The Sun's Super Hug!
The real reason Mercury wobbled wasn't a secret planet. It was because of Albert Einstein's amazing idea called general relativity! He said that really big things, like our Sun, actually bend space and time around them, like a bowling ball on a trampoline. This 'space-time hug' from the Sun explained Mercury's funny path perfectly!
