Who Was Christopher Columbus?

Christopher Columbus was a brave explorer from a place called Genoa, which is in Italy. He loved to sail the seas and dream of faraway places. He wanted to find a faster way to get to places like India and China, where amazing spices and treasures came from.

He imagined sailing west across the big ocean instead of taking long, difficult land routes. He was inspired by other explorers who told amazing stories of Asia!

Setting Sail on Four Amazing Trips!

Between 1492 and 1504, Columbus took four super long trips across the Atlantic Ocean. He sailed for Spain, on three tall ships named the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María. These ships were like floating homes for months!

He was looking for a westward path to Asia, but instead, he landed on islands in a place we now call the Caribbean. He thought he had reached the 'Indies,' which is why those islands are sometimes called the West Indies!

Discovering a 'New World'!

When Columbus arrived, the lands he found were already home to many people, called Indigenous Americans. His voyages were like opening a door to a whole new part of the world for Europeans. This was a super important time called the Age of Exploration.

It meant that people from Europe started to learn about and travel to the Americas much more. This led to big changes for everyone involved, and it's why we call these trips the beginning of modern times!

Why His Trips Matter Today

Columbus's journeys were a really big deal. They helped connect different parts of the world that didn't know about each other before. This led to new kinds of trade and the sharing of plants, animals, and ideas between Europe and the Americas.

Even though it happened a very long time ago, the effects of his voyages are still felt today. It's like a giant puzzle piece that connected the world in a new way!
