Who Are These Speedy Critters?

Voles are small, furry animals that look a bit like mice, but they're actually cousins to hamsters and lemmings! They have stout bodies, short legs, and tails that are a little longer than their bodies. Their ears and eyes are small, which helps them stay safe underground.

There are tons of different kinds of voles, over 150 species, so they come in many shapes and sizes, but they all love to munch on plants!

Where Do Voles Hang Out?

Imagine a cozy blanket of grass โ€“ that's the perfect home for a vole! They live in meadows, fields, and forests all over the world, from North America to Europe and Asia. They dig little tunnels and pathways under the grass, creating secret highways where they can scurry around safely. These tunnels help them find food and hide from hungry birds and other animals.

What's a Vole's Favorite Meal?

Voles are herbivores, which means they only eat plants! Their favorite snacks include grasses, roots, seeds, and berries. They are always busy nibbling away, and their strong teeth help them chew through tough plant stems. Sometimes, they even store extra food in their burrows to eat later, just like you might save a cookie for later!

Vole Babies and Busy Lives

Voles are super busy creatures. They are active day and night, always on the move looking for food or digging new tunnels. When they have babies, called pups, they usually have a few at a time. These little pups grow up fast and learn to forage for themselves. Voles are an important part of nature, providing food for other animals and helping to spread plant seeds.
