Key Facts

Eruptive Material
Magma, ash, gases, and steam are expelled from volcanic vents or fissures.
Eruption Types
Eruptions are classified by their behavior, such as Hawaiian, Strombolian, Vulcanian, and Plinian.
Driving Force
Decompressing gases in magma or superheated steam from magma and water interaction.
Measuring Strength
The Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI) measures eruption strength from 0 to 8.

Earth's Fiery Burps!

Imagine the Earth has a tummy ache! Sometimes, it needs to burp out super hot stuff from deep inside. That's a volcanic eruption! It happens when hot, melted rock called magma, along with gases, pushes its way up through cracks in the Earth's surface. This can create a big, exciting, and sometimes scary show of smoke, ash, and glowing lava!

When Volcanoes Wake Up!

Volcanoes don't just erupt the same way. Some are like gentle fountains, spitting out lava that flows slowly. Others are like powerful cannons, blasting ash and rocks high into the sky! Scientists have special names for these different kinds of eruptions, like Hawaiian eruptions that are calmer, and Plinian eruptions that are super explosive, like a giant firework show!

What Comes Out?

When a volcano erupts, it can send out amazing things. There's lava, which is magma that has come out of the ground and is super hot and glowing! There's also ash, which is like tiny pieces of rock and glass, and gases that can smell funny. Sometimes, steam from hot water underground can also cause an eruption, like a giant kettle boiling over!

Why Volcanoes Matter!

Even though eruptions can be powerful, they also help make new land! The ash that falls can make soil really good for growing plants. And over a very, very long time, lava can cool down and form new mountains and islands. So, while they are exciting and sometimes dangerous, volcanoes are also a big part of how our planet changes and grows!
