Key Facts
Meet the Viking Ships!
Viking ships were super special boats used by people called Vikings a long, long time ago. They were built in a place called Scandinavia. These ships weren't like the boats you see today.
They were long and skinny, and they could bend a little, which made them strong. They had two ends that looked the same, and a strong bottom called a keel. Vikings used these amazing ships for all sorts of adventures!
Sailing Far, Far Away!
Vikings used their ships to explore new places and trade with people in faraway lands. They sailed across big oceans, to islands like Iceland, and even to places like Greenland and a place called Newfoundland, which is now part of Canada! Some ships were built for speed to chase enemies, while others were for carrying lots of goods for trading.
They could even sail in water as shallow as a bathtub!
Built Tough and Smart!
These ships were built in a clever way called 'clinker building'. This means wooden planks were layered on top of each other, like shingles on a roof, and then fastened together with metal pins. This made the ships strong and waterproof.
Sometimes, Vikings would decorate the front and back of their ships with cool designs, like dragon heads, to make them look extra fierce and impressive. It was like giving their ships a cool costume!
More Than Just Boats!
Viking ships were super important because they helped the Vikings travel and discover new parts of the world. They were used for exploring, trading goods, and sometimes even for fighting. Because they were light, Vikings could even carry them over land between rivers! These ships were like the Vikings' own special kind of airplane or car, letting them go wherever they wanted.
