Who is Vesta?

Imagine a super important goddess who loved keeping things warm and safe! That was Vesta. She was the Roman goddess of the hearth, which is like the fireplace in your house, and also of home and family.

She didn't have many stories told about her looking like a person. Instead, people thought of her as the fire itself, burning brightly in her special temple. This fire was super important to the Romans, like a giant, magical nightlight for their whole city!

Vesta's Special Fire Keepers

Vesta had special helpers called Vestal Virgins. They were like her personal fire keepers! Only these women could go into Vesta's temple.

They had a very important job: to keep the sacred fire burning all the time. The Romans believed that if Vesta's fire went out, something bad might happen to their city. These Vestal Virgins had to promise to stay virgins, meaning they couldn't get married.

It was a big responsibility to protect Vesta's fire and keep everyone safe!

A Big Party for Vesta!

The Romans loved Vesta so much that they had a whole week just for her, called the Vestalia! It happened in June, and it was one of their biggest holidays. During this time, grown-up women would walk barefoot through the city to Vesta's temple.

They would bring food offerings to show their respect. It was a way to thank Vesta for keeping their homes safe and warm. Even when new religions came along, people still worshipped Vesta for a very, very long time!

Vesta's Family Tree

Vesta was part of a big, powerful family of gods! Her dad was Saturn, and her mom was Ops. She had famous brothers like Jupiter, who was the king of the gods, and Neptune, who ruled the sea.

She also had sisters like Juno, who was married to Jupiter, and Ceres, who was the goddess of farming. Vesta was one of the most honored gods, right up there with the others. Her Greek friend was a goddess named Hestia, who also watched over the hearth.
