Who Was This Explorer Dude?

Vasco Núñez de Balboa was a super brave explorer from Spain who lived a long, long time ago, around the year 1475. He was also a bit of a pirate, which means he sometimes took things he shouldn't! But he's most famous for being the very first European to see the big, blue Pacific Ocean. He did this by walking across a narrow piece of land called an isthmus.

Sailing to New Places!

Vasco sailed all the way across the ocean to a place called the New World when he was about 25 years old. He first lived on an island called Hispaniola. Then, he helped start a town called Santa María la Antigua del Darién. This was the very first town built by Europeans that stayed put on the mainland of the Americas. It was a big deal!

The Big Ocean Discovery!

The most amazing thing Vasco did was in 1513. He and his friends trekked across a jungle in Panama. It was tough work! But after a long walk, he climbed to a high spot and saw a huge, sparkling ocean. He called it the 'Mar del Sur,' which means 'South Sea.' This was the first time Europeans knew about the Pacific Ocean!

Why We Remember Vasco

Vasco Núñez de Balboa is remembered because he was the first European to discover the Pacific Ocean. This discovery opened up new paths for explorers and changed how people in Europe thought about the world. It was like finding a whole new part of a giant map! His journey showed that there were more amazing places to explore.
