Meet the Ute People!

Imagine living in a place with tall mountains and wide-open spaces! That's where the Ute people have called home for hundreds of years. They are Indigenous people, which means they were the first people to live in this special land. Their homeland is in places like Utah and western Colorado. They are known for being very connected to the land and have many interesting traditions.

Riding the Winds: Horses and Homes

A long, long time ago, the Ute people learned to ride horses. Horses were like super-fast cars for them! They helped them travel across their big territory to hunt and visit other Ute families. The Ute people lived in different groups called bands. These bands would sometimes come together for big celebrations and to trade things they had. They were very good at living with nature.

When New People Arrived

For many years, the Ute people lived peacefully. Then, around 300 years ago, people from Spain arrived. Later, more people called Euro-Americans came. Sometimes, these new people wanted the Ute's land. The Ute people were brave and tried to protect their homes. Sadly, they were sometimes forced to move to special areas called reservations.

Ute People Today!

Even though things have changed, the Ute people are still here! Today, there are three main groups of Ute people, and they are all federally recognized tribes. These tribes are the Southern Ute Indian Tribe, the Ute Indian Tribe of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation, and the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe. They continue to share their culture and traditions with the world.
