Who is Uranus, the Sky Father?

Imagine the sky above you, vast and blue! In ancient Greek stories, that sky was a god named Uranus. He was one of the very first gods, even before Zeus! Uranus was like a giant blanket covering the Earth, which was also a goddess named Gaia. He was the father of many powerful beings called Titans, who were like the first super-heroes of the world.

Born from Mother Earth!

Uranus didn't have parents like you do. He was born all by himself from Gaia, the Earth! After he was born, he married his mother, Gaia. Together, they had lots of children, including twelve sons and six daughters. These children were called the Titans. They were super strong and ruled the world for a long time before their own children, like Zeus, took over.

A Sky God's Big Job

Uranus was the personification of the sky. This means he was the sky! He was always there, watching over everything. While he was a very important god, people didn't build many temples just for him or tell lots of stories about him compared to other gods. But sometimes, when people wanted to make a really serious promise, they would call upon the sky, Earth, and a river god together.

What's in a Name?

The ancient Greeks called him Uranus, which means 'sky'. When the Romans, who lived in a different place and had their own stories, heard about him, they gave him a similar name: Caelus. It's like how you might have a nickname that's different from your real name. So, Uranus and Caelus are like two names for the same sky god from different ancient cultures.
