Where is This Giant Garden?

The United States National Arboretum is a super-duper big garden located in Washington, D.C., the capital city of the United States. It's not too far from the big building called the Capitol. Think of it as a special park just for plants!

It's so large that the roads inside it are longer than 15 football fields put together. It's a place where scientists study plants to learn how to grow even more beautiful flowers and stronger trees.

How Did This Plant Paradise Start?

A long, long time ago, in 1927, people decided that America needed a special place to learn all about trees and plants. A very smart scientist named Frederick Vernon Coville helped make it happen. Congress, which is like the country's big decision-making group, said 'Yes!' to creating this amazing place.

Since then, it has grown and grown, becoming a home for thousands of different kinds of plants.

What Can You See and Do There?

This garden is HUGE! It's 446 acres, which is way bigger than your school playground. You can find all sorts of amazing plants here, like trees that are hundreds of years old and flowers that smell super sweet. Scientists work here to discover new plants and make sure our trees stay healthy. They even have a special room with over 800,000 dried plant pieces, like a giant plant scrapbook!

Why is This Garden So Important?

This special garden is like a library for plants! Scientists use it to learn how to grow the best fruits and vegetables and to find new plants that can help us. They also study how to protect our trees from bugs and diseases. It's a place that helps us understand nature better and makes our world more beautiful with all the colorful flowers and strong trees.
