Key Facts
A Super Secret Spy Squad?
Unit 731 was a secret group that worked for the Japanese army a long, long time ago, from 1936 to 1945. They had a special base in a place called Manchukuo, which is now part of China. This wasn't a normal science lab; it was a place where terrible things happened. They were supposed to be doing research, but it was very, very dangerous for the people involved.
What Did They Do Inside?
Inside Unit 731, scientists did experiments that were incredibly harmful. They would give people terrible sicknesses to see how they spread, and sadly, they even did operations without making people sleep first. They also tested how people could survive in extreme cold or with no air, like in a tiny airplane cabin. It was a place filled with fear.
Who Were the 'Logs'?
The people who were experimented on were called 'logs' by the scientists, which is a very sad and unkind name. Most of these people were from China, but some were also from places like Russia and Korea. Sadly, even children and pregnant women were part of these experiments. It’s important to remember them and know that no one survived from inside the main facility.
A Sad Story, But We Learn
After the war ended, some of the people who worked at Unit 731 were punished. But some important leaders were given special passes by another country to keep their research a secret. This is a very sad part of history, but by learning about it, we can understand how important it is to be kind and to always protect people.
