Key Facts
Splash into the Game!
Imagine a game played at the bottom of a swimming pool! That's underwater hockey! Two teams try to push a heavy puck into the other team's goal using special sticks. It's like regular hockey, but you're swimming and holding your breath! Players wear masks to see, snorkels to breathe when they surface, and fins to swim fast. It's a super fun way to play a sport in the water.
Where Did This Cool Game Come From?
This game started a long, long time ago in England, in a town called Portsmouth. In 1954, a man named Alan Blake wanted his diving club to have something fun to do when the water got too cold for regular diving. So, he invented 'Octopush,' which is another name for underwater hockey! It was a way to keep his friends active and excited about their club during the winter months.
Why is Holding Your Breath So Important?
The most exciting part of underwater hockey is that you can't use scuba tanks to breathe underwater! This means players have to be really good at holding their breath. They swim down, push the puck, and then pop back up for a quick breath before diving again. It’s like a game of underwater tag mixed with hockey, and it makes you super strong and good at holding your breath!
Ready to Play? Here's How!
To play, you need a swimming pool, two goals that sit on the bottom, a puck that's a bit heavy so it stays down, and sticks for each player. Teams have about six players in the water at once. They work together to move the puck down the pool. It's a team sport, so talking and passing are important, even though you can't talk much underwater! You have to use signals and teamwork.
