The Great Iowa Road Trip!

Imagine a super-long road that goes all the way across the southern part of Iowa, like a giant stripe! U.S. Route 34 is that road.

It starts way out west, near a big river called the Missouri River, and drives all the way east until it crosses another huge river, the Mississippi River. It's like a ribbon connecting towns and cities, making it easy for people to travel and see new places. Think of it as Iowa's own special highway adventure!

A Road from the Olden Days!

This road is super old, like your grandparents' grandparents old! It was one of the very first U.S. Highways when they were invented way back in 1926. Before it was called Route 34, people called it the 'Blue Grass Route.' It was so important that they paved the whole thing with smooth black pavement, making it the first road in Iowa to be all paved! That was a HUGE deal back then!

Bridges, Big and Small!

Route 34 has some amazing bridges! It starts by crossing the Missouri River on a bridge that connects Iowa to Nebraska. And at the very end, it crosses the mighty Mississippi River on a bridge called the Great River Bridge.

These bridges are like giant arms reaching across the water, letting cars travel over without needing a boat. Some parts of the road are wide with four lanes, like a superhighway, while other parts are cozy two-lane roads.

What's Happening on the Road?

This road isn't just for cars; it's a place where history happened! Once, when they were building part of the road, they found old Native American bones. This made people think a lot about respecting the past.

Also, this road has been made bigger and better over the years. It used to be narrower, but now some parts are four lanes wide, which is like having two lanes going one way and two lanes going the other way, making it easier for lots of cars to drive safely.
