Meet the Speedy Tu-144!

Get ready to meet the Tupolev Tu-144, a very special airplane from a long time ago! It was built in the Soviet Union, which is now Russia. This plane was designed to fly super, super fast, even faster than the speed of sound! It was the very first passenger plane in the whole world that could break the sound barrier. Imagine a jet that zooms through the sky like a rocket!

When Did This Jet Take Off?

The Tu-144 first flew on the very last day of 1968, just before 1969 started. That was even before the famous Concorde plane took its first flight! It was a big race to see who could build the fastest passenger jet. The Tu-144 was a product of the Tupolev Design Bureau, a group of clever engineers. They built 16 of these amazing planes.

Flying Higher and Faster Than Ever!

This incredible jet could fly at an amazing height of 16,000 meters, which is super high up, way above the clouds! It traveled at about 2,200 kilometers per hour. That's like flying from your house to the next town in just a few minutes! The Tu-144 first went faster than sound in June 1969, and then it became the first passenger plane to go over twice the speed of sound in 1970.

A Jet with a Short, Fast Trip

Even though the Tu-144 was super fast, it didn't fly for passengers for very long. It only made about 100 flights, and less than half of those carried people. Sometimes planes have problems, and this one had a few. It stopped carrying passengers in 1977. Later, it was used for carrying mail and even helped train astronauts for space missions!
