Key Facts
Where Did the Boom Happen?
Far, far away in Siberia, Russia, there's a huge, wild forest called the taiga. It's a place with lots of trees and not many people. On a sunny morning in 1908, something amazing happened right above this forest. A giant space rock, bigger than a school bus, was zooming towards Earth. But instead of crashing, it exploded high in the sky!
BOOM! What a Show!
When the space rock exploded, it was like a super-duper powerful firework! The blast was so strong it knocked down about 80 million trees. Imagine a giant's breath blowing over a whole forest and making all the trees fall down! It happened so fast, and the explosion was so bright, people miles away saw it. It was the biggest explosion like this ever recorded!
No Giant Hole?
Even though the explosion was HUGE, scientists didn't find a giant hole in the ground where the rock hit. That's because the rock exploded in the air, about as high as airplanes fly. It was like a giant bubble popping! The explosion sent out a shockwave that flattened the trees below. It's a mystery why the rock exploded before it reached the ground!
What Was That Space Rock?
Scientists think the space rock was a type of space stone, about as wide as a few houses put together. It was traveling super, super fast, much faster than a race car! It came from the east and was heading towards the west. This event is called the Tunguska event because it happened near the Tunguska River. It's a reminder that space is full of amazing and powerful things!
