Key Facts
A Royal Birthday Parade!
Trooping the Colour is a super special parade that happens every year in London. It's like a big party to celebrate the official birthday of the King or Queen! Even though it's for their birthday, it doesn't always happen on their actual birthday. Lots of people watch it on TV, and even more watch it on the streets of London. It's one of the biggest parades in the whole country!
Why Do They Carry Those Flags?
Long ago, soldiers used big flags called 'colours' on the battlefield. These flags were like a special meeting spot so soldiers could find their friends. The colours have special pictures and names of battles the soldiers won.
During Trooping the Colour, one of these special flags is carried very slowly so everyone can see it. The soldiers stand super still, and the flag is lowered for the King or Queen to see.
Marching Like Superstars!
The King or Queen rides in a fancy carriage from Buckingham Palace to a place called Horse Guards Parade. There, they see hundreds of soldiers marching perfectly in step! There are also amazing bands playing music, and even horses with shiny helmets.
After the parade, the King or Queen rides back to the palace and watches another march-past. Then, the royal family waves from a balcony while planes zoom overhead!
A Parade with a Bang!
After the parade, there's a special salute with 41 cannons firing! BOOM! It's very loud but very exciting. Then, the King or Queen and the rest of the royal family come out onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace. They wave to all the people watching below. Sometimes, there's a big flypast with lots of airplanes making cool shapes in the sky. It's a day full of excitement and tradition!
