Who Are These Colorful Critters?

Trogons are super special birds that look like they've been painted with the brightest colors! They have amazing green backs, red or yellow bellies, and blue or purple wings. Some even have fancy head feathers!

They love to perch on branches and look around, waiting for a tasty snack. They are like nature's little jewels hidden in the trees. They are found in warm, wet forests where there are lots of trees and yummy bugs to eat.

They are not found in cold places like the North Pole or snowy mountains!

What's on the Menu for a Trogon?

Trogons are mostly insect eaters, but they also love to munch on fruits and berries. They are like little feathered chefs, finding the best treats in the forest. They are patient hunters, sitting very still on a branch and then zipping out to catch a bug in mid-air or snatching it right off a leaf.

They also eat small lizards and frogs sometimes. Their favorite fruits are often found high up in the trees, so they are good at flying and finding food in tricky spots. They help spread seeds by eating fruit!

Where Do Trogons Hang Out?

These beautiful birds live in the warm, tropical forests of Central and South America, and also in parts of Africa and Asia. Think of places with lots of green trees, sunshine, and maybe even some rain! They like to live in the rainforests and woodlands, where they can hide among the leaves and find plenty of food.

They don't like it when their forest homes get too small, so they need big, healthy forests to live happily. They are like forest guardians, living in their special tree homes.

Trogon Babies and Fun Facts!

Trogons build their nests in tree holes or sometimes even in termite mounds! The mom and dad birds take turns keeping the eggs warm and feeding their little chicks. Baby trogons are born without any feathers and are very hungry!

A WOW fact is that some trogons have very long tails that look like they are floating when they fly. Another cool thing is that they can turn their feet around to help them grip branches really well, even upside down! They are truly amazing birds of the forest.
