Key Facts
Meet the Great Tree!
Long, long ago, a wise man named Dekanawida had a wonderful idea. He wanted to stop fighting between different groups of people. He imagined a giant, beautiful white pine tree as a symbol of peace.
This tree was so special it was called the Tree of Peace! It had four big roots that spread out like welcoming arms, inviting everyone to join in friendship. The Haudenosaunee people, also known as the Iroquois, chose this tree to represent their agreement to live in peace together.
Roots of Friendship
The Tree of Peace had special roots that grew in four directions: north, east, south, and west. These roots were like paths leading to the tree. If any other group wanted to be friends and join the Haudenosaunee, they just had to follow these roots to the tree.
At the very top of the tree, a sharp-eyed eagle sat watch. Its job was to spot any danger coming from far away and warn everyone to stay safe and peaceful.
A Symbol of Unity
Why a tree? Well, pine trees have needles that grow in bundles. The Haudenosaunee used bundles of five needles to represent the five groups that came together to form their peaceful nation. This tree wasn't just a drawing; it was a powerful idea! It meant that the leaders of these groups would always work together, and their promises of peace would last forever, like a strong, tall tree.
Peace for All!
The Tree of Peace taught important lessons. It stood for doing what is right, being healthy in mind and body, and having good leaders who help everyone. When groups agreed to peace, they would sometimes bury their weapons under a real tree. Then, they would replant the tree, making it a Tree of Peace. This showed everyone that the fighting was over and a new time of friendship had begun.
