Key Facts
What's This Big Rulebook About?
The Treaty of Lisbon is like a special agreement for a group of countries called the European Union, or EU. It's not a new rulebook, but it makes changes to the old ones. Think of it like getting an update for your favorite video game to make it even better!
It was signed by all the countries in the EU a long time ago, in 2007, and started working in 2009. It helps all these countries make decisions together more easily.
How Did They Make It?
Before the Treaty of Lisbon, the countries tried to make a whole new rulebook, like a giant constitution for Europe! But some people in France and the Netherlands didn't like it, so it didn't happen. Then, the leaders of the countries got together and decided to just update the old rulebooks instead.
They met in a city called Lisbon, Portugal, and that's how it got its name! It took a little while to get everyone to agree.
Why Is It So Important?
This treaty is important because it helps the EU countries make decisions faster. Before, some big choices needed everyone to agree, which could take forever! Now, in many cases, they can make decisions with a majority vote, like in your classroom when you vote for a class pet.
It also gives more power to the people who represent you in the European Parliament, making sure everyone's voice is heard.
Cool New Powers!
The Treaty of Lisbon gave the EU some new 'superpowers'! It created a President for the European Council, who is like the captain of the team, and someone to speak for all the countries on important world matters. It also made a list of rights for everyone in the EU, called the Charter of Fundamental Rights, which is now a real law!
And for the first time, it said countries could choose to leave the EU if they wanted to.
