What Was This Big Agreement?

Once upon a time, during a huge fight called World War I, Russia made a special deal with some other powerful countries. It was called the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk. Think of it like a peace treaty, but it meant Russia had to step out of the big war.

This happened a long, long time ago, in 1918, right when spring was starting. It was signed in a city called Brest-Litovsk, which is now in a country called Belarus.

Who Was Playing?

On one side was Russia, a super big country. On the other side were countries like Germany, Austria-Hungary, the Ottoman Empire, and Bulgaria. These countries were like the 'winners' of this part of the war. They told Russia, 'You need to give us lots of your land!' Russia didn't really have a choice because they were tired of fighting and wanted to stop the war for themselves.

Giving Away So Much Stuff!

When Russia signed this treaty, it was like giving away a huge chunk of its favorite toys. They lost control of places like Ukraine and Poland, which are big countries! They also lost lands with lots of factories and coal mines.

It was like losing over half of their industrial toys and almost all of their coal. They even had to promise to stop fighting with Finland and another place called the Ukrainian People's Republic.

Why It Was a Big Deal

This treaty was super important because it completely changed where Russia's borders were. It was like drawing a new line on a map and saying, 'This is mine now, and this is yours!' Even today, the borders that were drawn back then are very similar to the borders of Russia after the Soviet Union broke up. It showed how much power the other countries had and how much Russia had to give up to stop fighting.
