Trans-Alaska Pipeline System ENBLA02

Key Facts
Meet the Giant!
The Trans-Alaska Pipeline System is like a huge, metal snake that's 800 miles long! That's longer than driving from New York City to Chicago. It carries oil from the very top of Alaska, called Prudhoe Bay, all the way down to a town called Valdez. This giant pipe is 48 inches wide, which is about as wide as a big playground slide. It helps bring oil to places where people need it.
Building a Super Snake!
Building this giant pipe was a HUGE adventure! It took about 3 years, from 1975 to 1977. The workers had to build roads and bridges in super cold, snowy places where there were no roads before.
Sometimes, they had to build the pipe above the ground because the ground underneath was frozen like ice (that's called permafrost) and could melt if the warm oil flowed too close. They even built special stations to keep the oil moving!
Why is the Snake Important?
This giant snake is important because it helps the United States have its own oil. Before, the country had to get a lot of oil from other countries. The oil that travels through the pipeline is used to power cars, heat homes, and make electricity. It's like a superhighway for oil, making sure there's enough for everyone. It's a very important job for this big metal pipe!
A Speedy Journey!
The first drop of oil started its journey through the pipeline in the summer of 1977. It can carry a LOT of oil, enough to fill over two million barrels every day! That's like filling up millions of bathtubs with oil! Even though it can go super fast, it doesn't always carry that much oil now. Sometimes, things happen like leaks, but people work hard to fix them and keep the oil flowing safely.
