Key Facts

Smallest Unit of Matter
Atoms are the smallest particles of a chemical element that still have the properties of that element.
Building Blocks of Everything
All matter, from stars to your toys, is made of atoms.
Ancient Idea
The idea of atoms dates back to ancient Greece, over 2,000 years ago.
Invisible to the Eye
Atoms are too small to be seen, even with the most powerful microscopes.

Meet the Super Tiny Builders!

Imagine the smallest thing you can think of, like a speck of dust. Now imagine something even smaller, so small you can't see it even with a super magnifying glass! That's an atom.

Atoms are like the LEGO bricks of the universe. Everything you see, touch, and even breathe is made of these tiny, tiny pieces. They are so small that a tiny drop of water has more atoms than there are stars in the sky!

They are the basic building blocks of all matter.

Where Did Atoms Come From?

Scientists have wondered about atoms for a very, very long time. Ancient Greek thinkers like Democritus imagined that if you kept breaking things into smaller and smaller pieces, you'd eventually get to a piece that couldn't be broken anymore. They called this tiny piece 'atomos,' which means 'uncuttable.' It took thousands of years for scientists to really understand what atoms are and how they work, with many smart people adding their ideas over time.

Why Atoms Are Awesome!

Atoms are super important because they make up everything! The air you breathe, the water you drink, the chair you sit on, and even you are all made of atoms. Different kinds of atoms can join together to make different things.

For example, atoms of oxygen and hydrogen join to make water. Atoms are like the ingredients in a giant cosmic recipe book, and by mixing them in different ways, we get all the amazing stuff in the world!

What's Inside an Atom?

Even though atoms are tiny, they have even tinier parts inside them! In the middle of an atom is a 'nucleus,' which is like its tiny heart. Zipping around the nucleus are even smaller things called 'electrons.' The nucleus itself is made of even more tiny bits called 'protons' and 'neutrons.' It's like a mini solar system, with electrons orbiting the nucleus.

These parts are what give atoms their special properties.
