Meet King Casimir's Fancy Stone Bed!
Deep inside a very old church called Wawel Cathedral, there's a super special stone bed. This isn't just any bed; it's the tomb where a king named Casimir IV Jagiellon rests! It was made a super long time ago, way back in the 1400s, by a very talented artist. This tomb is made of shiny red marble and looks like a giant, fancy sculpture. It's like the most important bed in the whole kingdom!
Who Was King Casimir?
King Casimir IV Jagiellon was a very important person! He was the King of Poland and also a Grand Duke in a place called Lithuania. That's like being the boss of two big countries! He lived a long, long time ago, and when he passed away in 1492, he was put to sleep forever in this amazing stone bed. Later, his wife, Queen Elizabeth, joined him in the tomb when she died too.
A Spooky Surprise!
Guess what? In 1973, some brave people opened the tomb to clean it. But something strange happened!
Ten of the twelve people who went inside got sick and passed away not long after. People whispered about a 'king's curse'! Scientists later found out it was probably tiny, invisible things called fungus spores floating in the air that made them sick.
It's a good reminder to be careful with old places!
Why This Stone Bed is So Cool!
This tomb isn't just a place to sleep; it's a work of art! The artist, Veit Stoss, was super skilled and made it in a style called 'late Gothic.' It's like a beautiful story carved in stone. It tells us about kings from long ago and how they wanted to be remembered. It's a piece of history that people still visit and admire today, showing us how important King Casimir was!
