Titanic Memorial - Washington, D.C

Key Facts
Meet the Brave Statue!
Imagine a super strong statue standing tall in Washington, D.C. This is the Titanic Memorial! It's made of gray stone called granite and it's there to remember the amazing men who were on the Titanic ship. When the ship sank a long, long time ago, these brave men made sure the women and children got to safety first. This statue is like a big hug for their courage!
How Did This Statue Get Here?
After the Titanic sank, some wonderful women wanted to thank the brave men. They decided to build a special statue! They sent out thousands of cards asking people to give just a little bit of money, like the price of a candy bar. With that money and some help from the government, they could build this amazing memorial. A very talented artist named Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney designed it!
A Statue's Big Adventure!
This statue didn't always stay in one spot! It was first put up in 1930, which is a super long time ago! But then, they needed to build a new big building called the Kennedy Center. So, the statue had to go on a little break, stored away safely for two years. Then, it got to move to its new home in Southwest Waterfront Park, where lots of people can see it!
What Does the Statue Look Like?
The most exciting part of the memorial is a statue of a man. He's partly dressed, like he's ready for an adventure, and his arms are stretched out wide. He stands on a big stone base. Around him is a special stone bench area, like a cozy spot to sit and think. Itβs one of the few big statues in D.C. made by a woman!
