Meet Emperor Theophilos!

Theophilos was an emperor, which is like a king, who ruled a long, long time ago in a place called the Byzantine Empire. He was born around the year 812 and was in charge until he passed away in 842. He was part of a special family of rulers called the Amorian dynasty.

Theophilos was also the last emperor who believed in something called iconoclasm, which meant he didn't like religious pictures. He was a very educated ruler and loved to learn new things!

Battles and Buildings!

When Theophilos became emperor, he had to deal with two big problems: enemies from a place called the Abbasid Caliphate and others from Sicily. He was brave and led his soldiers himself to fight them. Sometimes he won small battles, but the enemies also fought back very hard.

One very sad time, they even attacked the city where his family came from! Even with these troubles, Theophilos also loved to build and fix up buildings. He wanted his empire to look grand!

Friends and Fun Facts!

Theophilos had a very smart friend named John the Grammarian. They liked to learn about other cultures, especially Arabic culture, and even made friends with the leaders of the Caliphate. Theophilos also made sure his empire was safe by working with other countries to stand up to their common enemies.

A WOW fact is that he was the last emperor to support iconoclasm, which was a big deal back then!

A Ruler Remembered

Even though Theophilos had to deal with tough times and sometimes made people unhappy because of his beliefs about religious pictures, people remembered him as a fair ruler. He was known for being a great builder and a good manager of his empire. After he was gone, his wife, Theodora, made sure people remembered the good things he did, even if they didn't agree with everything he believed.
