The Quarrymen
Key Facts
Meet the Band That Became The Beatles!
The Quarrymen were a super cool band that started way back in 1956 in Liverpool, England. It was made up of John Lennon and his school friends. They loved playing music together!
Their name came from their school, Quarry Bank High School. John's mom even taught him how to play the guitar and tune it like a banjo. How neat is that?
They played at parties and school dances, just having fun with music.
How They Got Their Awesome Sound
At first, The Quarrymen played a fun style of music called skiffle. It was like folk music but faster and more exciting! John Lennon and his friend Pete Shotton started the group.
Soon, more friends joined, and they decided on the name 'The Quarrymen'. They practiced and played wherever they could. It was all about making music and having a good time with friends before they even knew how famous they would become.
When Superstars Joined the Fun!
Two very important people joined The Quarrymen later: Paul McCartney and George Harrison. Paul joined in 1957, and George joined in 1958. At first, John thought George was too young because he was only 14! But George was a great guitar player. These three friends β John, Paul, and George β would go on to become the most famous band in the world, The Beatles!
From Quarrymen to Beatles: The Big Change!
As The Quarrymen started playing more rock and roll music, some of the original friends left. This left John, Paul, and George to keep the music going. They tried out different band names, like 'Johnny and the Moondogs' and 'The Silver Beatles'. Finally, in 1960, they changed their name to 'The Beatles'. This was the start of their amazing journey to becoming music legends!
