The Burghers of Calais

Have you ever seen a statue so big it looks like it could walk away? The Burghers of Calais is a super-duper big sculpture made of bronze! It shows six men who were very important in their town a long, long time ago. They look sad and worried, but also very strong. This statue is like a giant storybook made of metal, telling us about a brave moment in history.

Once upon a time, a city called Calais was in a big pickle. Mean guys called the English army were surrounding the city, and the people inside were hungry and scared. The English king said, 'If you don't give up, I'll do something really bad!' The mayor of Calais had to make a super tough choice to save everyone. It was like a really scary game of tag where the whole city was 'it'.

To stop the bad things from happening, six of the most important men in Calais, called 'burghers,' had to do something amazing. They put on rough clothes, tied ropes around their necks, and walked out of the city to meet the English king. They were offering themselves to be punished instead of everyone else!

It was like the bravest kids in class volunteering for a tough chore so no one else has to.

A famous artist named Auguste Rodin made this giant statue to remember those brave burghers. He wanted to show how sad and worried they felt, but also how courageous they were. The statue is so big, it's taller than a school bus! It stands in a special place so everyone can see it and remember the story of the Burghers of Calais and their big sacrifice.
