What Was the Territory of New Guinea?

The Territory of New Guinea was a big island part of New Guinea, a place far away. For a long time, from 1914 to 1975, it was looked after by Australia. It was like a special club where countries agreed to help manage this land and its people. Later, it joined with another part of the island to become Papua New Guinea, a country all its own!

Adventures During World Wars!

This island had some exciting, and sometimes scary, adventures! During World War I, Australian soldiers captured it. Then, during World War II, it was a very important place for Japan, who used a town called Rabaul as a big base. After the war, Australia continued to help guide the territory, making sure it was ready to become its own country.

A Land of Amazing Animals!

New Guinea is famous for its incredible animals that you can't find anywhere else! Think of birds with super colorful feathers, like the Raggiana bird-of-paradise, whose males have long, flowing plumes. There are also strange and wonderful marsupials, like tree kangaroos that can hop through the branches! It's a true paradise for nature lovers.

Becoming Its Own Country!

After many years of being a territory, the people of New Guinea worked together to become an independent country. In 1975, the Territory of New Guinea and the Territory of Papua officially became the independent nation of Papua New Guinea. It was a big moment, like graduating from school and starting your own adventure!
