Fun Fact
This war was also called the 'Great War' because it was so big and important!

Why Were They So Mad?

Long, long ago, Cuba was like a kid whose toys were always taken by someone else. That someone was Spain, a country far across the ocean. The Cuban people, especially the ones who owned big farms growing yummy sugar, felt like they weren't in charge of their own island.

They wanted to make their own rules and decide their own future, just like you want to choose your own games to play. So, they decided it was time to stand up and say, 'This is OUR island!'

The Spark That Lit the Fire!

One day, a man named Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who owned a sugar farm, decided enough was enough! He gathered his friends and workers, and on October 10, 1868, they shouted for Cuba to be free! This was like the starting whistle for a super long game.

It was the very first time Cuba tried to break free from Spain, and it kicked off a huge, decade-long struggle. This fight became known as the Ten Years' War.

A War That Lasted FOREVER (Almost!)

This wasn't a quick game of tag; it was a marathon! The war lasted for ten whole years, from 1868 to 1878. Imagine playing your favorite game for ten years straight! It was a really tough time for everyone in Cuba. They fought bravely, but sadly, Cuba didn't win its freedom completely after this war. It took two more tries, two more wars, before Cuba could finally be its own country.

Cuba's Brave Fighters!

The leaders of this big fight were often people who owned land and businesses in Cuba, like Carlos Manuel de Céspedes. They were called planters. They believed Cuba should belong to Cubans, not to faraway Spain. Even though they didn't win freedom right away, their bravery inspired others. Their fight showed everyone how much Cubans wanted to be free, and it paved the way for future victories.
