Meet the Mountain Whistle Pig!

Imagine a furry, chubby animal that loves to play in the mountains! That's the Tatra marmot. It's a special kind of marmot that only lives in one place: the Tatra Mountains.

These mountains are like a giant playground for them, with rocky hills and grassy slopes. They have thick fur to keep them warm when it's chilly and strong claws for digging cozy homes called burrows. They are super cute and make funny whistling sounds to talk to each other!

A Home in the High Peaks

Tatra marmots make their homes high up in the mountains, where the air is crisp and the views are amazing. They like to live in places called the alpine zone, which means it's very high up, above where most trees grow. They dig their homes, or burrows, into the ground.

These burrows can be quite big and have many rooms for sleeping, eating, and staying safe. They live with their families in these burrows, like a big, furry clan.

What's for Dinner?

These marmots are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They love munching on yummy grasses, tasty flowers, and other green things they find in their mountain home. They are very busy during the summer, eating as much as they can to get ready for a long nap. When winter comes, they curl up in their burrows and sleep for months and months, like a super long nap until spring arrives!

Why They Need Our Help!

Sadly, Tatra marmots are very rare, and there aren't many of them left. They are so rare that they are called 'endangered,' which means they need special protection. It's against the law to bother them or hurt them.

Scientists are working hard to learn more about them and make sure they stay safe in their mountain homes. We need to be careful and respectful of these special animals so they can keep living in the beautiful Tatra Mountains.
