Key Facts
What's a Tapir, Anyway?
Tapirs are amazing animals with a super-long nose, called a prehensile snout. It's like a flexible finger they use to grab yummy leaves and fruits! They have short tails and strong legs. Tapirs are herbivores, meaning they only eat plants. They love to munch on leaves, twigs, berries, and fruits. These shy creatures are also excellent swimmers and love to cool off in rivers and lakes.
Where Do Tapirs Hang Out?
You can find tapirs in two main places: the steamy rainforests of Central and South America, and the lush jungles of Southeast Asia. Imagine living where it's warm and wet all the time, with lots of trees to hide in and water to splash around in! They prefer to live near water, like rivers, swamps, and lakes, because they are such good swimmers and love to play in the water.
Tapir Superpowers!
Tapirs have a special nose that can bend and grab things, which is super useful for picking food. They are also fantastic swimmers and can even hold their breath underwater to escape danger or find tasty plants. When they feel threatened, they can run surprisingly fast through the forest. Baby tapirs are born with stripes and spots, which help them camouflage in the jungle!
Tapir Friends and Family
Tapirs usually live by themselves, but sometimes they might meet up with other tapirs. When a baby tapir is born, it's called a calf. Calves are very cute and have a special coat of stripes and spots that helps them hide from predators. After about a year, they grow up and become independent. Tapirs can live for a long time, sometimes as long as a human teenager!
