Key Facts
Meet the Little Mountains!
Sutter Buttes are like a small, round group of hills that decided to stand up tall in the middle of a super flat area called the Sacramento Valley. They are not really mountains like you see in big ranges, but more like bumpy domes that used to be volcanoes a long, long time ago! They are so small that some people call them the world's smallest mountain range.
The tallest spot is called South Butte, and it's as tall as about 200 giraffes stacked on top of each other!
A Volcano's Old Home
These hills are actually the leftovers from a volcano that went to sleep ages ago. It's not going to wake up, so it's called a dormant volcano. The ground around Sutter Buttes is very flat, like a giant playground. But then, BAM! These cool, rocky hills pop right out of the ground. They are made of hardened lava, which is like super-hot melted rock that cooled down and got hard like a rock.
A Special Place for People
Long ago, Native American tribes lived near Sutter Buttes and thought they were very special. Today, there's a town called Sutter right at the bottom of the hills. The hills, the town, and the whole area are named after a man named John Sutter.
He was given a lot of land by the Mexican government a long time ago. Even though a park is planned, it's not open to visitors yet, so it's still a bit of a mystery!
What's So Cool About Them?
Sutter Buttes are special because they are so different from everything around them. They are like a surprise in the middle of the flat land. Even though they are called the world's smallest mountain range, they are still important because they are a unique part of California's geography.
They remind us that the Earth has a very interesting past, with volcanoes and changes happening over millions of years.
