Strom Thurmond's Super Long Speech!
Key Facts
The Day the Talking Didn't Stop!
Once upon a time, in 1957, a man named Strom Thurmond was a Senator in the United States. He really, really didn't want a new law to pass. This law was about making sure everyone, no matter their skin color, could vote easily.
So, Strom Thurmond decided to do something super unusual. He stood up and started talking, and he just kept talking and talking! It was like a game of 'who can talk the longest' but for a very important reason.
Longer Than Your School Day... and Then Some!
How long do you think Strom Thurmond talked? Try to imagine! He talked for 24 hours and 18 minutes! That's longer than a whole school day, plus bedtime, plus breakfast, plus another whole school day! He even read from old books and laws to keep his voice going. This was so long that it became the second longest time anyone has ever talked by themselves in the Senate. Wow!
Why All the Talking?
Strom Thurmond was talking to try and stop a law that would help Black Americans vote more easily. He believed the law was wrong. He read many different things, like election rules from every state and even a speech from George Washington! He wanted to make sure the law didn't get passed. It was a big moment in history, and his long speech was a way to protest.
Did It Work?
Even though Strom Thurmond talked for a super long time, the law he was trying to stop eventually passed. It was called the Civil Rights Act of 1957. It was signed by the President and became a law that helped many people. Even though his speech didn't stop the law, it's remembered because it was one of the longest speeches ever given in the Senate!
