Meet the Super Long-Serving Senator!

Imagine a politician who stayed in the same job for almost as long as you've been alive! That was Strom Thurmond. He was a United States Senator for South Carolina for a super long time, 47 years!

That's longer than most kids go to school, from kindergarten all the way through college. He also used to be the governor of South Carolina before becoming a senator. He was born way back in 1902, which is so long ago that cars were just starting to become popular!

The Marathon Talker!

Strom Thurmond did something really wild once. He talked for over 24 hours straight in the Senate! That's longer than a whole day and night.

He did this to try and stop a new law about civil rights. He was so determined to get his point across that he just kept talking and talking. It's like trying to stay awake for a whole school day and then some, without even a break!

This record is still amazing to think about.

Switching Teams!

Sometimes, people change their minds about which team they want to be on. Strom Thurmond was part of the Democratic Party for a long time, but then he decided to join the Republican Party. He did this in 1964.

It was a big deal because he was the first Republican Senator from his state in almost 100 years! It's like if your favorite sports team suddenly decided to wear a completely different color uniform.

A Senator for a Century!

Strom Thurmond was so dedicated to his job that he was still working as a Senator when he turned 100 years old! Can you imagine being 100 and still going to work every day? He was the oldest person ever to be a Senator and the one who served the longest. He retired in 2003, but he left behind a legacy of serving his state for many, many years. He was a very important figure in American politics.
