Key Facts
Earth Gets a Makeover!
Long, long ago, even before the dinosaurs, there was a special time called the Statherian Period. It lasted for a super long time, from when Earth was 1.8 billion years old until it was 1.6 billion years old! During this time, the big pieces of land on Earth, called continents, were getting together and becoming more solid, like building with strong LEGO bricks.
It was a time when our planet was becoming more stable, or 'statheros' as the ancient Greeks would say, meaning firm and steady.
Breathing Easier (Kind Of!)
Back then, the air we breathe today wasn't quite the same. The amount of oxygen, the stuff we need to live, was much lower than it is now. Imagine if the air had only about as much oxygen as a small room compared to a giant stadium!
It was about 10% to 20% of what we have today. This meant that life had to be pretty tough and simple to survive in those conditions. But even with less oxygen, amazing things were starting to happen on our planet.
The First Tiny Bubbles of Life?
Scientists have found some really old fossils, which are like ancient clues left behind by living things. In rocks from the Statherian Period in India, they found something called Rafatazmia. It's a big word, but it might be one of the very first examples of a special kind of life called a eukaryote.
Eukaryotes are like the building blocks for all the plants and animals we know today, including us! Itβs like finding the first tiny bubbles that would eventually grow into giant trees and playful puppies.
Super Continents and Natural Power!
During the Statherian, a giant supercontinent called Columbia had already formed, like all the world's landmasses smooshed together. And guess what? Around 1.7 billion years ago, in a place called Oklo in Gabon, there were natural nuclear reactors!
These weren't like the ones we build today, but they were like nature's own power plants, working deep inside the Earth. It shows how amazing and powerful our planet was, even billions of years ago.
